About this work

Design from 1868 for a monument in honor of the Dutch and Belgian Zouaves who fell in the Battle of Mentana on 5 November 1867. These Catholic volunteers defended the Papal States under the government of Pope Pius IX against the attacks of Victor Emmanuel II and Giuseppe Garibaldi. Intended to be erected in Mentana, Italy, but never executed.
