About this work

The clothing of the portrait subject fits the image (then and now) of the "Orient" in "Western" imagination. Part of a group of photographs collected by photographer Richard Polak during his travels. This photograph was made around 1910 by his travel companion Mr. L. de Bruyn. Photographs he collected on earlier travels were exhibited at the Rotterdamsche Kunstkring (1895), Arti en Amicitiae in Amsterdam (1897-1898?) and Societeit 't Collegie in Kampen (date still unknown).
