About this work
In the 19th century, nudes were an acceptable subject if portrayed demurely enough. Photographs by definition showed real rather than imagined people, as in paintings; photographers thus had to take care to stay within decorous boundaries. As an 'artistic study', this photograph by Hanfstaengl is in keeping with what was customary and acceptable in art.
