About this work

Photo album in green leather cover. On the front and back the coat of arms of the French Emperor Napoleon III is displayed, in the corners are monograms. On the spine the title and the part number are mentioned. The endpapers are of green changeant with a border decoration of French lilies in gold stamping. The album contains 76 pages with gold-gilt edges each containing one to three photos. The album is part of an ensemble of four with which the construction of the new Louvre between 1854 and 1857 was documented step by step on behalf of the French government. The albums were offered as presentation copies to the emperor, friendly heads of state, ministers (such as the Rijksmuseum copy) and libraries. 36 such sets were compiled, each with about 550 photos. Only four ensembles have survived.
