About this work

Céphas was commissioned to photograph important rituals and performances at the royal palace (kraton) of Yogyakarta. Here a gamelan orchestra accompanies a wayang kulit play, in which the shadows of skilfully carved leather dolls are projected onto a screen. Such shows usually took place at night.
