About this work
The introduction of photography in 1839 launched a revolution in image making. Paintings, drawings, and prints in no way could vie with the realism of the camera. Yet there was one great disadvantage: colour photography was not yet possible, everything was printed in black and white. The first practical colour process only came onto the market in 1907, the French Lumière brothers' autochrome. This still life is one of the finest early autochromes in the Rijksmuseum.
