About this work

What better souvenir of Japan than a series of photographs? Professional photographers catered to those who did not take pictures themselves. Gradually, Japan developed a market for photos of cities, temples and similar attractions. Bird's-eye views like this one of Nagasaki were popular, presenting a compact overview of a place wholly unfamiliar to most people back home.
