About this work
In his final letter from Japan, Albert wrote that he hoped to return via India. The initials 'A.J.B.' on the back of this photo suggest Albert (Albertus Johannes) purchased it there. Galle Fort was captured by the Dutch from Portugal in 1640, around the same year they succeeded the Portuguese on Dejima as the only nation allowed to reside there. And to trade on the island, which was what really mattered.
