About this work

In the background we see an island the Dutch called Papenberg, where ships were stopped for inspection by Japanese authorities. Any weapons and Christian attributes (Bibles, crucifixes) were confiscated. On release, the ships could proceed to Nagasaki Bay and the Dejima trading post.
