Just how bizarre was the project of Mahoney, a radiologic technologist with the American company General Electric and a formally trained artist? In the 1930s, working with Northwestern University near Chicago, he created a technique allowing him to record soft tissue, in addition to bones, with X-rays. His team sectioned frozen bodies and made life-sized recordings of them. Only recently has it become clear that the (mostly African-American) cadavers, the 'unclaimed bodies,' came from the slums of Chicago.
