About this work

The Englishman Jones made this photograph using the method of William Henry Fox Talbot. By exposing paper coated with chemicals, a negative image was created, from which (unlike the Daguerre method) multiple positive prints could be made. A long exposure time was necessary to obtain a well-drawn photograph. Therefore, the people in the foreground had to stand still for minutes.
