About this work
Photo album with front and back boards covered in a warp of thread and weft of vegetable fibers. The album likely originally had a Japanese binding. On the front board is a remnant of a label and three figures with umbrellas. The album contains 12 unsnipped leaves with a total of 24 photographs. These are hand-colored albumen prints of sights in Japan, including landscapes, parks, street scenes, bridges, and shrines. Also included are staged studio photographs of rickshaw pullers, women during cleaning, girls in traditional dress, workers, etc.
