About this work

Lewis Carroll was not only a writer, but also a fervent amateur photographer. His favourite subject: young girls. The way in which he posed his models was often derived from paintings by contemporaries. In Carroll's day, painting served as an inexhaustible source of models for many photographers. It lent them artistic standing, which the young medium did not yet have in the 19th century.
