About this work

One of amateur photography’s great charms was its immediacy. This sometimes yielded magical masterpieces, whether or not intentionally. This portrait, most likely of a father with his son, is so touching because we can almost feel the father’s protective embrace. Such intimate and spontaneous portraits were virtually unheard of in this time.
