About this work

Julia Margaret Cameron explored the artistic possibilities of the new medium of photography through technical experimentation. In this portrait of her niece, Julia Jackson, the photographer opted for a soft-focus effect, giving rise to a mysterious and painterly dimension. With this approach, Cameron became one of the founders of Pictorialism, an aesthetic movement within photography that strove to approximate painting.
