About this work

The realism and directness of photography fascinated the artist Willem Witsen. He experimented with portraits in which the head was taken at close range and filled the frame. The close-up was his point of departure. During a visit to his brother-in-law Arntzenius he took various photographs of the latter's children out of doors.
