About this work

The two disciples from the story of the Emmaus travelers in an interior, illuminated by candlelight, at a table upon which lies a piece of bread. They look startled at a third empty chair, from which Christ has just suddenly disappeared after He had broken the bread for them. After this action the disciples had recognized the travel companion unknown to them until then as Christ and He disappeared suddenly before their eyes. Top right: P. 238.
