About this work
Europa is carried away by Jupiter in the guise of a bull across the sea. In the background on the right, Europa's maidservants are in despair on the shore. Behind them is the herd of cattle, driven to the coast by Mercury, so that Jupiter (visible on his eagle in the clouds) could mingle among them and approach Europa unnoticed. Below the image, two sets of two lines of Latin text. This print is part of a series of 52 prints depicting stories from Ovid's Metamorphoses. The series is divided into three numbered sets: two sets of 20 prints and one set of 12 prints. This print belongs to the second set.
