Majombe Encourages the Spanish Heathen Girl Preciosa

In a landscape the Roma woman Majombe encourages the young Preciosa or Konstance, after her husband Andreas or Don Jan has been taken prisoner. On the left stands a man, next to him a seated woman seen from the back. In the front right a woman feeds her child. Print from an edition of the play The Life of Konstance, about the noble Spanish Konstance, who was kidnapped as a child by Roma and grew up among the heathens. The Little Spanish Heatheness Preciosa and the old woman Majombe are both figures taken from the story 'La Gitanella' by Miguel de Cervantes from 1613, in the Netherlands known as 'The Little Spanish Heatheness'. Heathen and heatheness were contemporary terms for the Roma people.
