Ignorance Hides That Peace Is Only an Illusion

The False Peace (Pax falsa) rests on a bed from which hang symbols of the Roman faith: votive offerings and an aspergillum. The bed stands on a thin stick. In the background, a monk sprinkles an altar with holy water. The entire scene is shrouded in a mist originating from the open mouth of Ignorance (Ignorantia), a gigantic head that emerges from the earth and has no eyes. The print has a Dutch, Latin and French inscription and is part of a twelve-part series with the subject of the degeneration of the Catholic clergy and the causes of the uprising and the Iconoclasm.
