About this work
Jephthah returns after his victory over the Ammonites and is joyfully welcomed by his daughter and women playing music (Judges 11:34-36). Jephthah is about to tear his clothes in despair, having promised God to sacrifice the first thing that comes out of his house to meet him; it turns out to be his daughter.
