About this work
In a wooded landscape with a body of water, the farmer Battus stands behind his cow in the foreground. With his raised left hand, he points towards Mercury who stands beside him. Mercury wears winged shoes, his winged helmet, and his caduceus, with which he touches Battus to turn him into stone.
