About this work
Christ appears as judge. He stands on a cloud beside Mary. With his raised arm, he makes a threatening gesture. He is surrounded by groups of cherubim, saints, and apostles. At the very bottom, the damned are taken by devils to hell and tortured there. Charon ferries the dead with his boat. At the top is a portrait of the painter Michelangelo, aged 73. The print was made after his fresco in the Sistine Chapel in Rome.
