Lighthouse of Alexandria

The Lighthouse of Alexandria. As far as known the first lighthouse ever built. This was commissioned by the first Hellenistic king of Egypt, Ptolemaeus II. The tower was built between 297 and 283 BC and served for almost 1500 years for the Greeks, Romans, Byzantines and Arabs in succession. It stood on the island of Pharos in the Mediterranean, just outside the harbor of Egyptian Alexandria. In the foreground right Ptolemaeus II and the architect of the lighthouse, Sostratus of Knidos. The print has a Latin inscription and is part of a series on the eight wonders of the world.
