Louis (Luigi or Louis), born 1778 as the son of Carlo Maria Buonaparte and Maria Laetitia Ramolino. After his father's death in 1785 he was raised by his older brother Napoleon. He came to the mainland of France in 1791. Napoleon arranged a marriage in 1802 between his brother Louis and his stepdaughter Hortense de Beauharnais, daughter of his wife Joséphine de Beauharnais. It was an unhappy marriage. Charles Hodges portrayed the king in 1809, dressed in the uniform of a Dutch colonel. On his chest Louis wears the Grand Cross of the Royal Order of the Union, which he himself had established. [Pendant of the portrait of Queen Hortense, RP-P-1906-3390]
