On the right in the background Emperor Theodosius I, who gives the order for the slaughter. Below: St. Ambrose stands in the portal of a cathedral with hands outstretched. Opposite him stands Emperor Theodosius I. Ambrose forbids him to enter the church because Theodosius had seven thousand citizens of Thessaloniki slaughtered.
