About this work
Bust of Carolus Clusius (Arras, February 18, 1526 – Leiden, April 4, 1609) at the age of 75, in an oval with a border inscription. The oval is placed in an ornamental frame with flower vases and a winged female figure emerging from a cornucopia on the left and right. Clusius' family coat of arms in the center above. Latin caption in a cartouche below the portrait. Carolus Clusius, actually Charles de l'Écluse, was a Flemish scholar, physician, and botanist. He played a major role in the spread of the potato and tulip in Europe.
