About this work

These pendant portraits show a man and a woman in the prime of their lives: Elisabeth van Dort van Roosendaal and her betrothed Theodoor van Zuylen, were 23 and 24 years old and recently engaged. However, it would not come from a marriage due to Theodoor's premature death. Presumably Elisabeth had the portraits made in memory of her beloved.
