About this work
A musical contest between Pan, in the center of the print, and Apollo, to the left under a tree. All the gods are gathered to witness the contest. The mountain god Tmolus, seated on a throne, must pass judgment. He prefers Apollo's lyre to Pan's flute. King Midas, who stands next to Pan, protests however. He is cursed by Apollo and must for the rest of his life wear donkey ears.
