About this work

Interior with elegant company, dressed according to French court fashion of ca. 1634. On the music of a viola da gamba and two violins a couple dances in the middle path. The man wears a hat with a wide brim and large feathers. Below the curly hair falls to the shoulders, on one side in a 'cadenette' in which a ribbon is knotted. On the doublet, which is richly decorated with passementerie, a wide flat collar of lace. Around the waist a rangée d'aiguillettes. Openwork sleeves through which the shirt is visible. Gallooned breeches, fastened just below the knee with a ruban folttant. Shoes with a large rosette (the rest of the gentlemen wear boots). The lady is dressed in a dark japon that is open at the front over a light jupe carré tombant sur la terre. Bodice with decolleté with wide balloon sleeves, decoupées à bandes. The man to the right front, seen from behind, wears overshoes.
