About this work
Mercurius beheaded Argus after he had played him to sleep with his shepherd's flute. With the severed head in one hand and the sword in the other, Mercurius hovers above the lifeless body of Argus. On the ground a dog barks after Mercurius. The print is part of a four-part series of prints with scenes from the mythological story of Argus.
