About this work

French King Louis XIV with his armies ready to depart for the Netherlands, 1672. Standing on the bank of the Seine, at the place where the building will rise, the king approves the plans for the construction of the Hôtel des Invalides. In the foreground a grateful war invalid with a wooden leg. In the air Fame blows a trumpet with the emblem of the French king.
