About this work
Book illustration for the story of the Annunciation of the Birth of John (Luke 1:5-23). Zacharias is visited in the background in the temple by an angel during the incense offering. The angel tells him that he will have a son named John. Then Zacharias comes outside the temple (foreground). He tries to address the crowd, but cannot speak due to the miracle. He makes do with gestures. The print contains a reference to the corresponding Biblical passage.
