About this work
The print shows the heroic death of the Jesuit Cornelis Sylvius. In the midst of a stormy sea the priest holds a crucifix in the air with his right hand. A chalice is bound to his belt. Next to him floats the corpse of a sailor. In the background a ship that is the plaything of the wild waves. One of the sailors is still on the ship and praying kneeling. The print has a Dutch inscription: 'P. Cornelius Sylvius of the Society after he had prepared the sailors in a terrible tempest and exhorted them to death, drowned with great piety.' Numbered 207 in the top right.
