About this work
The Seven Bishops of England, imprisoned in the Tower in 1688 by King James II for openly opposing his Declaration of Indulgence. In the center, the portrait of Archbishop William of Canterbury, surrounded by the portraits of William of St. Asaph, John of Chichester, Thomas of Peterborough, Jonathan of Bristol, Thomas of Bath and Wells and Francis of Ely. At the top, two medallions: one depicts the Tower, the other a scale with a sun and a moon.
