About this work
Various men ask Penelope for her hand, claiming her husband Odysseus is dead. Penelope points to the loom before her to clarify that she will only choose a new husband once she has finished the shroud for her father-in-law Laertes. Hanging behind her is a pair of scissors, referring to the moment she destroys her weaving at night. Above the image, an angel surrounded by a radiant halo holds a laurel wreath and a torch. At the bottom, a rose and a lily sprig.
