About this work
In the image the naked truth, with a torch in her hand, is forced to the ground by a number of officers. On the left stands Marianne, symbol of France. According to the caption she refuses to put on her liberty cap as long as the truth is not standing upright. The print refers to the end of the Dreyfus affair in Rennes where a Jewish-French officer, Alfred Dreyfus, was wrongly accused of being a spy for Germany. The names of the persons involved are listed under the figures.
