About this work
Otto von Bismarck stands with his back against a Russian officer. The Reinsurance Treaty (Rückversicherungsvertrag) was a secret treaty he concluded with Russia, bypassing Austria and Hungary. From his pocket protrudes a doll with a reference to the Schnabele affair, an incident that almost led to war between France and Germany. The dialogue below the print refers to the tense international relations at that time. This print was published by De Lantaarn.
