About this work

Portrait of Adriaen Joosten van Bergen, one of the turf-boatmen of Breda. On 4 March 1590, Van Bergen brought 72 States soldiers into the city of Breda with his cargo of turf for the Spanish occupiers. They recaptured the fortress from the Spaniards and brought the city and castle back into the hands of Prince Maurice.
