About this work
The sitter sits on a chair with, at the top of the backrest, wood carving in the form of an open book. On the lapel of his jacket he wears a knighthood order, on the table next to him lie two books. In his right hand he holds an open book, in his left hand a knife intended to cut the pages of the book loose.
