About this work

In the room of a monastery two women support a young woman, Melanie. Behind them stand three nuns and sit a mourning man. Left two men. In the background view into a chapel. The print depicts a theatrical scene from Melanie, or The Calamitous Monastic Coercion, a tragedy by Jean-François de La Harpe about Melanie, who is forced by her father to give up her love for a man and enter the monastery.
