Relief with the fall of Icarus above the door to the Desolate Estate Chamber in the northern gallery of the Town Hall on the Dam in Amsterdam. Despite his father Daedalus's warnings (the winged man on the right), Icarus flew too close to the sun, causing the wax of his wings to melt and him to fall. Above the Desolate Estate Chamber – where bankruptcies were pronounced and handled – this relief serves as a warning to the viewer: Icarus's recklessness and pride led to his fall, just as recklessness and pride could lead to bankruptcy.
