Relief with Amphion and Zethos in the Burgerzaal of the Town Hall on the Dam

Relief with Amphion and Zethos above the door of the Justitiekamer on the east side of the Burgerzaal in the Town Hall on the Dam in Amsterdam. To the right Amphion playing his lyre, with his brother Zethos behind him. According to the myth, the stones gathered by Zethos piled up by themselves thanks to Amphion's lyre playing to form the city wall of Thebes. In the background, however, it is not the wall around Thebes but the Amsterdam Town Hall being built. This symbolizes on the one hand how harmony, here arising from music, promotes the growth of the building. On the other hand, it conveys a message to the regents: harmony within the city government and harmonious policy will lead to harmony among the inhabitants and will cause the city to flourish.
