About this work
Satirical print on the exaggerated fear in the Netherlands in July 1880 regarding the smallpox epidemic raging in Belgium, which was exploited by doctors, especially in The Hague. A calf hangs upside down in the ropes of a fairground stall; on the right, visitors stream into the stall and emerge vaccinated, while on the left a small orchestra plays. Abraham Kuyper tries to hold back the people with a newspaper in his hand.
