About this work
This poster evokes the image of 'getting out and about.' Cycling was considered a healthy leisure activity from around 1900. Two ladies lead a procession riding away from town. The bicycle afforded women freedom of movement and became a symbol of women's emancipation. Bicycle factory Simplex was based in Amsterdam from 1896 and used a simple advertising slogan: Simplex Snel Sterk (Simplex Speedy [and] Strong).
