About this work
Jessurun de Mesquita taught drawing from nature for many years, especially of animals, plants, and shells. Normally, these subjects served as the starting point for a schematic execution with an ornamental character. Here, however, he shows us a naturalistic yet sketchily rendered shell. The semicircle and the black bands in the background appear flat. They represent a section of a stovepipe and the frame of a mantelpiece.
