About this work
Jacques-Bénigne Bossuet (1627-1704) was a versatile man: bishop, renowned orator and polemicist, and an influential church politician under Louis XIV. Hyacinthe Rigaud painted his portrait as bishop in full regalia in 1702. The portrait by Drevet, mirror-image to the painting, is considered a masterpiece of the engraver, who was appointed 'graveur du roi' in 1729.
