About this work

In the courtyard of Herod's palace in Bethlehem, mothers try to protect their children from his soldiers. The soldiers have been ordered to kill all boys of two years and younger. The soldiers snatch the children from the arms of the desperate mothers. In the margin an inscription in Latin.
