About this work

A funeral procession passes a palace. The deceased shepherd Iphis lies on a bier. He committed suicide because the woman he loved, Anaxarete, despised him. Anaxarete looks through the window at the funeral procession and remains unmoved. Therefore, Venus turns her into stone. Below the image, a four-line verse in Dutch and a reference to the text in Ovid's Metamorphoses.
