About this work
Marcus Curtius armed on horseback. He is about to jump into a fissure in the earth. The legend states that the chasm could only be closed by 'offering the most valuable possession'. Marcus Curtius considered the courage and strength of the Roman soldiers the most valuable; he sacrifices himself and plunges into the burning chasm.
